Internal/External Pressure Face seal glands can be one-piece machined grooves because seal installation does not require excessive stretching or compressing. The Spring Energized Polymer seal is designed to have clearance or slight interference fit on the back of the seal (non-pressure side) so it will press easily into the gland. The glands for face seals can be enclosed or open to the pressure side. Because the seal is somewhat ridged, it will hold its position in the gland and not normally drift out. If any back pressure is expected in the application, a closed groove should be used.
